So, most of you know at least what BB Code is, and know that there are the common and simple ones for bolding, underlining, ect...  These are just used as ways to format your text and when it get's parsed into the HTML that you see when you view the page they get converted to HTML that actually gets rendered in a special way.

Most of these are handled automatically by the editor that you use when you type stuff in. Hitting the buttons up top, translates into BBCode behind the scenes. There are a couple of these that are custom or that are not straightforward and I just wanted to make a guide outlining all of them, how they are used, and why you would want to use them, so let this be your guide!  :)

Many of these have boxes that pop up that help you format the BBCode, but there is no help or description for any of them.

BBCode: Acronym

Description: Creates a section of text that has a hover over to allow people to see what it means.

Syntax

[acronym='My Crazy Acronym']MCA[/acronym]

Ouput:

MCA

BBCode: Anchor

Description: Creates an anchor on a selection of text which can be linked to by adding #<anchor name> to the topic url.

Syntax

[anchor='name']text to anchor[/anchor]

Ouput:

text to anchor

BBCode: Background

Description: Writes whatever text with the color of background specified.

Syntax

[background=blue]htrhtr[/background]

Ouput:

htrhtr

BBCode: Blog Entry Link

Description: Links to a blog entry of a writer. (We don't use this functionality on GSN).

BBCode: Blog Link

Description: Links to a blog of a writer.   (We don't use this functionality on GSN)

BBCode: Extract Blog Entry

Description: Creates an extract about a linked blog entry.   (We don't use this functionality on GSN)

BBCode: Horizontal Rule

Description: Puts a separator across the page.

Syntax

[hr]

Ouput:

   (Will get confusing if I put one here, but these are what I'm using to separate these posts out).

BBCode: Media

Description: Create the proper embed code to show videos and other media. These are usually parsed automatically. You can post youtube, twitch, vines, vimeo, and more. Give it a whirl and see if it works for you.

Syntax

[media]http://vimeo.com/19414546[/media]

Ouput:

View on Vimeo.

BBCode: Member

Description: Creates a link to a member profile and send them a notification that they were mentioned (if subscribed). These are parsed on our boards automatically if you use the @ in front of a name but it won't work on names with a space in them. To do them, you will need to use the manual method.

Syntax

[member='Al Hoff']

Ouput:

Al Hoff

BBCode: Page

Description: Used to create a multi-page post. Not used here at GSN.

Syntax

[page]

Ouput:

N/A

BBCode: Post Link

Description: Used to create a link directly to a post by post ID.

BBCode: Spoiler

Description: Creates a button that will show/hide the text only after it is clicked.

Syntax

Ouput:

BBCode: Thumbnail

Description: Shows an image at a square size (the value inserted is for both height and width), and it puts it to the left and allows the text to wrap around it.  Be careful when using this as the image will NOT make the text, post, or and BBCode go past it. In order to get passed the image, you will need to leave several spaces under the image in your post while editing/typing.

Syntax

[thumb='200']http://mr0ut.com/media/news/gsngaming.jpeg[/thumb]
